Background_Where we go

The open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain, the centerpiece of Mikumi Park, can be compared to the famous Serengeti.

Criss-crossed by a good circuit of game-viewing roads, the Mkata Floodplain is the most reliable place in Tanzania for sightings of the powerful Eland, the world's largest antelope. The equally impressive greater Kudu and Sable Antelopes along with Zebra, Wildebeest, Impala and Buffalo herds can be viewed from a good circuit of game viewing roads.

Park Highlights Include:

  • The concentration of animals in Mkata Floodplain includes four of the Big Five (Elephant, Buffalo, Lion and Leopard)
  • Located 283 km west of Dar es Salaam, it is easily reached by tarmac road and is on the way to Udzungwa & Ruaha National Parks
  • More than 400 bird species have been recorded in the park, from the striking turkey-sized group hornbill to the tiny sunbirds.
  • Both game drives & walking safaris are available to view the park.
