Tanzania Travel Safety

Tanzania is, in our opinion, safe to visit. This is even more so if you book an organized safari. Theft and pickpocketing is relatively common in big cities but incidents are easily avoided when using a few simple safety precautions. Almost a million tourists visit Tanzania every year, and most visits are trouble-free. Your safari guide will ensure your safety at all times always listen carefully to the instructions and follow the park rules. When on a self-drive safari, never leave your car outside of designated areas and never approach animals too close. As most incidents happen in big cities like Dar es Salaam and Arusha, we do not recommend to walk alone in the city after dark (7pm). This rule applies throughout Africa and not just Tanzania. Use safe transport like taxis or ask your hotel or guide to arrange the transfer. Common sense goes a long way. Make sure you take some precautions, such as not wearing costly jewellery or let an expensive camera hang down your neck. Never carry valuable things in your pocket but lock them in the hotel safe. Keep important things like your passport and credit card in a money belt under your clothes, out of sight.
